Blue Frog
“My local Blue Frog on Hongmei Lu. Stiff competition from Johnny Moos and Big Bamboo for hamburgers, but Blue Frog definitely comes out on top and also the most expensive.”
Boonna Café
“A good place for the tech road-warrior to chill and catch up on emails while sipping a spiced tea. Once you have your work done, walk next door to Constellation for some Gin'n'Tonics and Single Malts. The original Constellation with a great bar. Oh but we are talking about Boona Cafe... lots of photo albums and generally an interesting crowd. Not much space. Get in early to grab the window seat before the students do.”
Whisk Choco Café
“I've only tried the extra special hot chocolate here. Its seriously quite good. An odd crowd. Never that busy. ”

“Have had some great Pizza here and a few less memorable ones. But generally its pretty good! I like the Quattro Stagioni pizza. The outside deck is a really nice place to chill with some friends. Good wine selection. ”
Big Bamboo
“My local Big Bamboo. A place to watch some sports. Drink some beers. Hamburgers are not too shabby either. Good for after work drinks. Blue Frog next door still has the better burgers - just not the pub atmosphere of Big Bamboo.”
Johnny Moo
“Cheap good hamburgers with fresh toppings. Fat fries. The Cajun and Chili burgers are my two favorites. This place probably has the best selection of Milkshakes in Shanghai - thick and creamy! They have quite a few other dishes, but for me, this place is close to my house and hits the spot for a quick burger and shake!”
Cafe Montmartre
“Not bad... Not bad... Their Croque Madame rocks for breakfast, lunch and dinner ( Ive done this ) - Its made properly unlike Pauls which cheats and just makes a ham sandwhich with cheese on the outside... Salads are always fresh - but just so so... The Chefs Daily specials are normally excellent. Had a pretty good Wild mushroom Quiche and a most excellent warm chocolate cake - which was actually pretty damn good! Coffee aint bad too. They have large brunches on Saturday/Sunday for Y138, but havent tried this yet! Menu looks good! Atmosphere is good. Alot of single french men (older) who come in and sit at the same table day after day (I did the same).
update: I just realized (while sitting in a taxi) that there is one on Hongmei Lu, north of Yan An lu... BRILLIANT!!!!
update 2: The Montmartre on Hongmei Lu is less than good. Noticed its all Chinese chefs. They overcooked and burnt everything. How disappointing... will try again, but didnt enjoy the Croque Madame - was an effort to eat it... :-( :-( :-( The weekend brunch seemed ok. Too much salad. Salad was not as fresh as the French Concession location. French toast was too small. Crepe was good. Croissant was pretty good. French loaf was too doughy and heavy.”
Karaku
“Went here on a whim, expecting the usual oily overcooked and uninspired tempura common in Shanghai and most places around the world. But, to my surprise received the best tempura I've ever had - better than what I ate in Japan and definitely better than anything to be found in Shanghai. Toyoichiro Seki came to chat and cooks for all his customers. Have a drink with him - very friendly guy. Really a great experience. Pricey but, I think worth every cent!”

“I love this place! Some of the best Sichuan food in town. Not expensive either. Go for the Catfish with Spicey 5 star! Almost all the dishes are excellent!”
De Zhuang
“My wife loves this place. The middle soup (mushroom broth) is delicious and compliments the rest of the hotpot. Beef quality is good. The sour prune juice is refreshing! Try the potato noodles. The fresh shrimp dumplings are awesome with a unique texture. This is one of the few hotpot places that does not drive your guts nuts.”
